Watch: Foreign Agents – A Book Talk and Panel Discussion with Casey Michel

Sponsored by the FACT Coalition and Transparency International U.S.

On October 17, 2024, the FACT Coalition and Transparency International U.S. hosted a virtual book talk and panel discussion with Casey Michel, author of the new book, Foreign Agents: How American Lobbyists and Lawmakers Threaten Democracy Around the World. The discussion focused on how the U.S. should strengthen its policies, legal frameworks, and enforcement actions to address rising threats to democracy.

Foreign Agents describes how some American professionals have “opted to take their talents to despots and dictators willing to foot the bill and degrade American democracy in the process.” The book spotlights laws, such as the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), and legislative proposals designed to ban former U.S. government officials from lobbying for foreign regimes.

This panel discussion covers the most important policy reforms to make sure foreign agents – and dirty money – don’t undermine American democracy. Speakers:

  • Casey Michel, author of Foreign Agents: How American Lobbyists and Lawmakers Threaten Democracy Around the World and American Kleptocracy
  • Scott Greytak, Director of Advocacy, Transparency International U.S.
  • Elaine Dezenski, Senior Director and Head of the Center on Economic and Financial Power at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies
  • Ian Gary, Executive Director, FACT Coalition
